5 ways to boost your energy without spending a penny

BBrett Nethell, authorBrett NethellWritten on 11th August
5 ways to boost your energy without spending a penny

From drinking coffee to injecting vitamin B12, people will do anything for more energy, chasing adding more instead of removing what’s dragging them down. Often it is the simplest things that have the most impact and the same goes for our energy. Rather than chasing adding more stuff into our routines we can often carry out basic energy boosting activities that don’t cost us a dime but often yield better results.

In this article we’ll highlights 5 methods you can use to boost your energy today for free, the only thing you need to do is read and actually carry out the chosen method.

1. Release fascia

Our fascia when released can give us a significant amount of energy, since lots of energy is spent trying to move stiff muscles throughout our body. When our fascia is stretched, worked and released we can gain a boost of energy that feels more powerful than any cup of coffee. Tight muscles, tendons and ligaments don’t just make you feel stiff, they drain your energy at every waking moment.

You don’t need special equipment either, simply follow a basic body weight stretching routine and enjoy the benefits of more energy. Try to incorporate stretching daily and if you do want to invest some money into your routine look into foam rollers, spike balls and slant boards.

2. Breathe

When was the last time you took a great deep breath? Probably a while ago. Breathwork and filling your lungs with oxygen can greatly improve how much energy you have and how calm you feel right now.

This doesn’t have to be hyper ventilating, with a strict breathing pattern, instead simply taking a few deep breaths in a calm, relaxed and gentle way, in through the nose and out.

I’ve discussed it many times before but mouth breathing is a stressful state, nasal breathing instead promotes the parasympathetic nervous system also known as rest and digest. Being consciously aware throughout the day if you are mouth breathing as well as using mouth tape at night can greatly improve your energy during the day and sleep quality.

3. Sleep

As touched on above, sleep is the main pillar for solid energy levels, if we sacrifice sleep or struggle to get good sleep, we simply cannot have energy. Once you’ve built a good base of health, you can have a night of bad sleep and not be affected but you still need to prioritise your sleep every night.

Having a wind down routine, making your room dark and coming off technology will greatly improve your ability to get to sleep, stay asleep and have deeper more restful sleep.

Making sure you move enough throughout the day is a free tool that can help sleep immensely, we were built to move and going to sleep not having moved much at all that day is often a reason people struggle to sleep.

4. Move

Most people believe that if they started working out, walking more, stretching, then they’d be come even more tired, when the opposite is actually true. As mentioned above our bodies were built to move not stay stationary. A vast number of systems in our bodies depend on movement such as lymphatic system, fascia health, detox systems, the list goes on, if you don’t move these system stagnate and toxins build up, draining our bodies of energy.

Now you don’t have to run a marathon or lift extremely heavy weights, you simply need to incorporate more movement, even gentle walks are enough to boost energy levels significantly.

Low intensity cardiovascular exercise such as hiking, walking etc are great for getting systems such as the lymphs moving, lifting and resistance training is powerful for hormone and muscular energy. Yoga and other forms of slow deep stretches and great for targeting the fascia. If you want more energy quickly, get moving!

5. Affirm you have energy

Affirmations often get dismissed as placebo but if you can switch your mindset from “I’m always tired” to “I am full of energy” then the latter will be the case, too often we join in with others about feeling tired and exhausted rather than actually listening to our bodies and refusing to join into the collective moan that one genuinely tired person may have started.

The placebo effect literally proves that simply thinking of an out come, in this case having more energy, can make it so, it may sound silly but if it works then its worth trying.

Summary

Coffee is great and food is even better, but we don’t always need to add more energy boosting stimulants to our intake to feel more alive. Often it’s what we can remove along with simple habits that cost nothing that make the biggest difference to our energy levels.
