5 ways to restore your mineral balance
Our mineral balance affects our body more than most realise, one of the most affected areas is our sleep. Sleep is a core part of our health, if it starts to falter, our health quickly goes downhill.
Many believe that simply drinking more water will hydrate them or that electrolyte powders are all they need to stay on top of things, when in actual fact our mineral balance goes far deeper than simply drinking more water or getting a small dose of potassium from an electrolyte sachet.
If you consistently wake in the night to urinate, or have regular headaches, these are two signs your mineral balance is off, restoring it will bring better uninterrupted sleep, less headaches and more energy. This doesn’t have to be complicated, nature has the all the answers as we’ll discover shortly.
1. Sea swims
Some of the healthiest people in the world are those who live by the coast, why? because they regularly swim in the sea. We don’t just have to rely on eating and drinking to get our minerals in, we can also absorb it through our largest organ, our skin.
The sea contains minerals such as magnesium, sodium, calcium and potassium. It is no wonder that swimming in the sea or even just dipping your toes, can relieve a lot of tension within our body and make us feel so much better.
If you live by the coast and it’s not too cold, make an effort to regularly visit the beach. The consistent intake of minerals through your skin will improve your mineral balance and overall health.
If you do not live anywhere near the sea, lakes can also have the same affect but if that is too cold for you, drawing a nice hot bath of filtered water and adding magnesium flakes to it, can be a great way to keep those minerals coming in wherever you live, whatever the weather.

2. Drink more milk
Theres a reason many of us were given milk when we were in school as kids, milk is a rich source of calcium and calcium is an electrolyte that many are missing especially since veganism exploded in popularity and people ditched real milk for milk alternatives.
Milk is a complete food and getting more dairy into your diet from good quality sources will improve all aspects of your health, helping to support the return of your mineral balance while also providing protein, healthy fats and probiotics.
If you cannot tolerate dairy, I would highly recommend looking into raw dairy if you haven’t already tried it, but if that still doesn’t work for you, look into having more wild caught sardines or salmon tinned with their bones included since these are edible and a great source of calcium.

3. Drink more juice
Most people are not only magnesium deficient but also highly lacking in potassium. When we start drinking more milk, we gain more potassium but fruits and fruit juices are some of the best sources of potassium we can get. Pomegranate juice being of the richest sources of potassium. When we begin to boost potassium from natural sources we give the kidneys what they need to flush out toxins and often lose that puffy look that comes with a low potassium intake.
Dates and orange juice are another two great sources of potassium that are easy to load up on and improve your mineral balance, helping you re-gain that equilibrium that we so desperately need for our health to thrive.

4. Drink more bone broth
Bone broth is a natural healer, unfortunately it has been forgotten in modern society. As we slow cook or pressure cook bones in water, we are extracting the nutrients within the bone marrow and distilling it into the broth.
Bone broth isn’t a huge dose of any one mineral or electrolyte in particular but it does contain a large variety as well as improving the environment (the gut) in which it is going in to, helping those minerals that come later from our diet be absorbed more effectively.

5. Eat more sea salt
We were told to reduce our salt intake but we need sodium to be able to thrive. The quality of your salt is of huge importance, ensuring for one it is sea salt or well sourced rock salt and secondly free of contaminants such as heavy metals. Highly quality sea salt is very much the opposite to table salt.
Adding more real salt into your diet will help you feel more energised, have better hormone health, and help improve your mineral balance. If you are lacking in energy, having regular headaches or feel weak, chances are you aren’t getting enough salt.
Trace minerals, of which there can be above 60 within sea salt are all going aid functions and processes within your body. Hundreds of these processes rely on us having enough minerals and electrolytes. Sea salt isn’t something to be feared but to be cherished.

Summary
Our mineral balance isn’t just about staying hydrated, it’s about ensuring your body has what it needs to operate properly and efficiently. Many things we do everyday will deplete our minerals and cause an unbalance to occur.
Turning to nature instead of synthetic powders is how you truly restore the balance. Keeping your energy levels strong, avoiding headaches and supporting your sleep are all dependent on your mineral balance, make sure it is always a priority and you’ll give your body the best chance of thriving.
