Hensing's Hilltop Acres

The Hensing family moved to Maryland in July 2010 and started the farm that year. It began with one Jersey cow bought so the family would have raw milk of their own, and by Kelly Hensing's own account everything else followed from there. They own and operate the land, pasture their cows, pigs, chickens and ducks on it, and sell what they raise direct: by online order, at their farmers markets, or by pickup at the farm.

Their beef calves stay on their mothers for four to six months, then eat only grass and hay, and are finished on an alfalfa mix with never any grain. The dairy is a small herd of A2 Jersey cows, and the milk from them is sold in Maryland labelled as pet milk. The pigs are kept outside on the farm, offered a non GMO grain mix but happiest chewing the greens they find in their field, and are never confined in a barn the way commercial pigs are. The chickens and ducks run free and are never caged, watched over by four livestock guardian dogs, and fed a grain mix that contains no soy and no GMOs.
