The best farms

  1. 1Ardross FarmArdross FarmMeat · Elie4.7 (539 reviews)Ardross Farm Shop is a family run farm shop on the fringe of the East Neuk of Fife, overlooking the Firth of Forth near Elie. The farm grows its own vegetables and rears grass fed beef, lamb and mutton, and the family care deeply about helping people connect with their food and cook with real ingredients. The shop is bursting with the farm's own meat and veg alongside produce from hundreds of small suppliers, from freshly baked bread and farmhouse cheeses to locally smoked fish, ready meals, fine wines and their own tallow skincare. It opens seven days a week, with a late night on Thursdays, and delivery is available through the online shop.
  2. 2Butchery at BowhouseButchery at BowhouseMeat · Bowhouse4.7 (12 reviews)Butchery at Bowhouse is a whole carcass butchery in the Bowhouse buildings at St Monans, in the East Neuk of Fife. Every animal is handpicked from the surrounding Balcaskie estate, where it is reared organically on a fully pasture fed diet. A rare breed Lincoln Red herd was introduced to Balcaskie in 2019, fed on grass all year round and moved daily to fresh pasture sown with herbal rich grasses; while that herd grows, Luing, British Shorthorn and Aberdeen Angus cattle are also picked from the field by Euan and the estate manager. The lamb is 100% grass fed and spends its life in the fields around the estate, and all the beef and lamb from Balcaskie is organic certified and Pasture for Life assured. Tamworth pigs live outside all year, rooting in pastures, cereal stubbles, forage crops and woodland, and the counter also carries aged cull ewe mutton and wild roe venison from the East Neuk. Nothing here is aged in a vacuum pack. Whole carcasses are hung in humidity controlled fridges with Himalayan rock salt on the floor to draw the moisture out, and each cut is used only at its prime, so you get more meat and less water. You can buy over the counter at unit 5 from Tuesday to Sunday, 8am to 4pm, and the butchery also trades at the monthly Bowhouse market weekends. Seasonal meat boxes go UK wide overnight by courier in insulated wool boxes. The team offers a private butchery and wholesale service too, for other small scale producers who want their meat handled with the same care that went into rearing it.
  3. 3The two farmers standing together in front of a stone wallSteading & Co.Eggs · Leven5 (9 reviews)Steading & Co is a family run regenerative farm at Easter Newburn Steading in Upper Largo, Fife, built on the idea that health starts in the soil. Alex, Symone and the family grow food without synthetic chemicals, keep animals on pasture free from routine antibiotics and hormones, and offer microscopic soil biology testing along with biological composts, teas and extracts for growers who want to understand their land. The farm sells beef, eggs and microgreens through its online shop, with the produce also stocked at Ardross Farm Shop and the Local Abundance REKO ring. Alongside the food there is personal training, online and in person, aimed at durable long term strength.
