The best farms

  1. 1K&N HoneyK&N HoneyRaw honey · Hitchin5 (41 reviews)K&N Honey is a small artisan honey producer based in Hitchin in Hertfordshire, making raw English honey in small batches. The honey is cold extracted and cold filtered rather than heated or pasteurised, which keeps the natural enzymes, proteins and character of each harvest in the jar. The range shifts with the seasons and the region, taking in Hertfordshire wildflower and hedgerow honeys along with field bean, heather cut comb, sunflower and lime tree varieties from counties including Norfolk, Oxfordshire and Yorkshire. Everything sells through the online shop, with harvest updates by newsletter.
  2. 2Two Jersey cows grazing close to the camera in low golden evening lightThe Calf at Foot DairyRaw milk · Hitchin5 (8 reviews)The Calf at Foot Dairy is Fiona Provan's pioneering micro dairy at Warrens Green Farm near Hitchin, founded in 2012 on the conviction that dairy cows should keep their calves until their natural weaning age. Her Jersey cows are pasture fed, some crossed with native breeds so they thrive on grass alone, with no routine antibiotics, wormers or chemicals, and no soya or GMOs in the diet. Every sale is direct from farmer to customer, which is what makes a true micro dairy, and the raw whole milk is ordered through the website's shop. Fiona also gives talks and offers visits, consultancy and mentoring for anyone hoping to start calf at foot dairying themselves.
  3. 3Irongate FarmIrongate FarmMeat, fruit & veg · HitchinIrongate Farm, also known as Weston Park Farms, is the Cherry family's 500 hectare regenerative mixed farm at Weston near Hitchin in Hertfordshire, and the home of the Groundswell Regenerative Agriculture Festival. The family have farmed here for more than 35 years. After a 2010 trip to meet no till growers in America, farm manager John Cherry dropped cultivations altogether, and the farm has since moved from a heavy tillage arable system to a regenerative one: minimum tillage, herbal leys, cover crops, no insecticides, no artificial fertilisers and no routine antibiotics. An organic conversion is now under way. Around 300 native cross suckler cows graze roughly 200 hectares of permanent pasture, parkland and rotational leys, mob grazed and Pasture for Life certified, alongside heritage grains, wheat, barley, oats, beans and linseed. A small no dig market garden on the farm grows chemical free seasonal vegetables sold through the farm's own veg scheme, through Lannock Larder and at local markets, and Pure Herts Honey from the farm's hives is sold at Lannock Larder too.
