The best farms

  1. 1DawliciousDawliciousRaw milk farm in Hertford4.9 (581 reviews)Dawlicious is the Daw family's dairy at Amwell Place Farm in Hertford Heath, Hertfordshire, home to Barry, Jenny and Claire and their national award winning Bluegrass and Bluerock Jersey herd. The cows graze the fields for six months of the year, and the raw Jersey milk is never older than 24 hours, completely unpasteurised and unhomogenised, with no Bovaer additive in the feed. Milk is sold from the vending machine at the farm every day, alongside Claire's Dawlicious ice cream made on site from the same milk, local free range eggs and local natural honey. Orders of 20 litres or more must be pre ordered by phone, payment is cash or card, and there is no delivery.
  2. 2Wayside FarmWayside FarmRaw milk farm in Kings Langley4.3 (555 reviews)Wayside Farm is one of only two remaining Jersey herd dairy farms in Hertfordshire, farmed by Charlie Wray on the outskirts of Kings Langley. Its 156 acres carry 75 Jersey cows and 70 young animals, nearly all born on the farm, on a county council holding first set up for officers returning from the First World War. Raw Jersey milk is sold at the farm seven days a week, and a small farm shop opens Thursday to Sunday. Call in at the gate, or ring Charlie ahead of your visit if you want to check on milk.
  3. 3K&N HoneyK&N HoneyHoney farm in Hitchin5 (41 reviews)K&N Honey is a small artisan honey producer based in Hitchin in Hertfordshire, making raw English honey in small batches. The honey is cold extracted and cold filtered rather than heated or pasteurised, which keeps the natural enzymes, proteins and character of each harvest in the jar. The range shifts with the seasons and the region, taking in Hertfordshire wildflower and hedgerow honeys along with field bean, heather cut comb, sunflower and lime tree varieties from counties including Norfolk, Oxfordshire and Yorkshire. Everything sells through the online shop, with harvest updates by newsletter.
  4. 4The Calf at Foot DairyThe Calf at Foot DairyFarm in Hitchin5 (6 reviews)The Calf at Foot Dairy is Fiona Provan's pioneering micro dairy at Warrens Green Farm near Hitchin, founded in 2012 on the conviction that dairy cows should keep their calves until their natural weaning age. Her Jersey cows are pasture fed, some crossed with native breeds so they thrive on grass alone, with no routine antibiotics, wormers or chemicals, and no soya or GMOs in the diet. Every sale is direct from farmer to customer, which is what makes a true micro dairy, and the raw whole milk is ordered through the website's shop. Fiona also gives talks and offers visits, consultancy and mentoring for anyone hoping to start calf at foot dairying themselves.
