Hi Plains Dairy is a family run dairy at Calhan, a short drive from Colorado Springs, milking both Jersey cows and registered dairy goats.
The animals are named and treated like pets, they have round the clock access to pasture full of varied plant species, and the milk is cooled rapidly after milking to keep it fresh.
Raw milk cannot be sold outright in Colorado, so the dairy runs a herd share. You buy an interest in the herd, pay a monthly boarding fee and collect raw cow or goat milk from a pick up point, currently Ranch Foods Direct on Fillmore, Wesley Owens Coffee and Cafe in Monument, and Ranch Foods Direct on Town Center Drive.

Terrible experience!! We had a herdshare for a time, then noticed the milk consistently tasting and smelling like a barnyard. Very expensive to have such an awful taste. After researching, learned that raw grassfed milk should NEVER taste or smell like this. Friends who volunteered there a short time told us that "grassfed" was actually a mud pit with some alfalfa tossed to the cows each day, and that the milking parlor was horribly unsanitary and lots of muck all over the floor and near the vats of milk. Jim made it very difficult to leave the herdshare program... we tell everyone we can to steer clear! If you really want good raw, grassfed milk look around on fb for smaller family dairies in the area.
