The best farms

  1. 1West Middlewick FarmWest Middlewick FarmRaw milk & meat · Tiverton4.8 (324 reviews)West Middlewick is a traditional dairy farm at Nomansland in the heart of Devon, run by the Gibson family, and it has sold raw milk from the farm since 1964. The closed herd of around 80 grass fed British Friesian and Friesian cross Jersey cows roams the fields around the farm and produces A2 milk, bottled fresh every day and sold as award winning raw milk alongside a pasteurised line. The farm also keeps about 120 sheep, pigs and around 100 chickens, and grows most of the animals' food itself. The farm shop has grown from an honesty box into a recently converted old shippon, selling fresh raw milk, farm reared meats and local Devon produce, with the Hayloft cafe alongside. The family are members of the Raw Milk Producers Association and were among the first farms in the area awarded Mid Tier Countryside Stewardship. Campers and self catering guests stay on the working farm in log pods and camping pitches, and the farm hosts an Open Farm Sunday each year with a cream tea.
  2. 2Three farmers standing with their goat herd on a green Devon hillsideCoastal Goats Goat MilkRaw milkCoastal Goats is the goat dairy of Smallacombe Farm, a family run organic farm near Dawlish in Devon that has been certified organic since 2003. The milk is made slowly and honestly, with a range that covers raw goats milk, gently pasteurised milk, yoghurt and a certified organic goat milk kefir. Everything is sold by delivery. Order online and the milk is dispatched chilled to your door, with subscriptions available if you want a regular supply, and the range is also stocked by retailers across Devon and Cornwall. The farm is not open to the public.
  3. 3Hall Farm DartmoorHall Farm DartmoorRaw milk & meatA small regenerative dairy at Harford near Ivybridge in Devon, milking a herd of Jersey cows that keep their calves at foot. The calves suckle their mothers until they wean naturally and then graze with the herd, and the cows live low stress lives on grass, ranging the fields and browsing the hedgerows through the year. The farm sells raw milk and live natural yoghurts, along with pasture raised beef in mixed boxes from the male calves reared alongside the dairy herd. Everything is sold from the farm itself, where the shop is open all day, every day.
  4. 4Higher Colston FarmHigher Colston FarmRaw milkHigher Colston Farm is a small farm just outside Axminster in Devon, milking a calf at foot herd of Jersey cross cows that are 100% grass fed. The farm also keeps an ancient cider apple orchard, whose fruit goes into their raw apple cider vinegar made with the mother. Raw milk and the vinegar are sold through the farm's online shop, with natural live yoghurt appearing when it is in stock. There are no fixed opening hours, so get in touch first to arrange a time to collect.
