The best farms

  1. 1Wild By NatureWild By NatureButcher in Hereford4.9 (84 reviews)Wild by Nature is a family farm in the Black Mountains on the border of England and Wales, farming regeneratively at Lower House Farm in Longtown, Herefordshire. All of the cattle and sheep are 100% pasture fed, traditional native breeds chosen to suit the hills and given time to mature and develop naturally. Livestock are managed to increase biodiversity and regenerate the soil, an ethos that also runs through the no dig vegetable garden and apple orchards. An on farm butchery lets the team dry age their meat and cure a range of farmhouse charcuterie, working nose to tail so nothing is wasted. The online farm shop sells pasture fed beef biltong, snacking salami, bresaola, natural pork and seasonal sheep boxes, with a charcuterie subscription club. The family also runs The Bull's Head pub at Craswall, cabins and a wedding venue, serving food from the farm.
  2. 2Hereford cattle grazing a green valley pasture beside a red Land Rover pickupModel FarmButcher in Ross-on-Wye4.5 (15 reviews)Model Farm at Hildersley near Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire has been rearing organic livestock since before the BSE crisis of the early 1990s, and farmer Simon Cutter was one of the first members of the Pasture Fed Livestock Association to become an approved supplier. His Hereford cattle, sheep and lambs are organically certified and raised solely on pasture and forage crops, with pigs and chickens kept free range. Using a low input organic system, the farm is self sufficient in feed, raising its animals on herb rich green grass all year round. The online farm shop trades as a loose co operative of 100% pasture fed farms and free range poultry and pork producers. No hormones or growth enhancers are ever used by its members, and antibiotics only when really necessary. Beef, lamb, pork, chicken, mutton and wild game are sold online with UK wide delivery, and every product carries a traceability barcode back to the individual animal, under Biodynamic Association, Red Tractor and Pasture for Life certification.
  3. 3Wye OrganicWye OrganicButcherWye Organic grows certified organic vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers in the Wye Valley, and raises beef, lamb, chicken and pork alongside wild venison. Everything is produced without chemicals, and the veg boxes hold whatever is in season on the farm's own land, topped up with organic vegetables from other local growers. It all works as a home delivery box scheme. Choose a veg box, meat box or flower subscription, set a weekly or fortnightly schedule, and pause, skip or cancel whenever you like. Order by 11pm on a Monday and your box arrives on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday that week, with free delivery on orders over £35.
  4. 4Fern VerrowFern VerrowFarm shop in HerefordFern Verrow is a 16 acre certified biodynamic farm at the foothills of the Black Mountains in Herefordshire, run by Jane Scotter and Harry Astley. Vegetables, herbs, fruit and flowers are grown to biodynamic principles, with a small number of animals contributing to the fertility of the land, and the farm also supplies restaurants and markets in London. Seasonal produce boxes can be delivered to your door or collected from the farm, and the online shop adds bunches of seasonal flowers, natural olive oil soaps, cards and T shirts featuring paintings of the farm's vegetables and fruit, and the Fern Verrow book.
