Balmerino is a family farm in north Fife that converted from intensive arable farming to organic livestock in 2020, sowing 65 acres of diverse herbal ley with 16 species of grasses, herbs, legumes and forbes.
The change was driven by a deep rooted ambition to boost insect and bird populations, and the endangered curlew, whose call can now be heard from anywhere on the farm, features on the balmerino logo. The sheep flock is a Merino cross developed to thrive in the Scottish climate while growing wool so fine it can be worn next to the skin.
Both the flock and the small herd of Dexter cattle, which graze the farm's 30 year old native woodland among oaks and wildflowers, are managed organically, certified by the Soil Association and by Pasture for Life. The sheep are rotationally grazed on the deep rooting ley, and each year a small number of cattle are sold as meat boxes, with hogget also offered through the farm's shop alongside its balmerino wool yarns and patterns.
