Dulce de Donke is Walt and Saundra Traywick's family donkey dairy at Luther, north east of Oklahoma City.
They started milking donkeys in 2014, after their six year old daughter woke with strep throat that set her own immune system attacking her brain, a condition called PANDAS. The best answer the specialists offered was antibiotics every day for the next thirteen years, so the family went looking for another one and found donkey milk. Their herd began with three American Mammoth Donkeys, a critically endangered breed descended from the French donkeys given to George Washington.
Raw donkey milk is sold by scheduled pickup at the farm, which they also call the Oklahoma Donkey Dairy. The soaps and moisturiser are made on the farm with the milk their daughter and other sick children do not need, so the supply is genuinely small: soaps often sell out before they finish curing, a four to six week process, and the moisturiser is made to order once a month. They also breed American Mammoth donkeys for approved homes, and ship skincare and freeze dried milk across the USA. They say they have no farm store and are not set up for farm tours at present, so arrange anything at the farm with them first.
