Hazelton Farms is a small family run farm at 14420 Wildwood Road outside Philomath, in Oregon's coast range.
The farm raises a small herd of yaks on pasture, grass fed, in the belief that animals should live a fun and natural life. Yak meat is lean and deep red, with a sweet, delicate flavor the farm describes as very clean on the palate.
The meat sells two ways: retail cuts for anyone who wants to try yak, and whole or half shares at $9.50 a pound with custom cutting, a free farm tour and the chance to watch the harvest on site. Processing happens at the farm through two mobile slaughter units, Farmers Helper from Harrisburg and Coastal Cutters from Newport. Cell service is spotty at the farm, so Nick Hazelton takes orders and questions by text or email.
