Stono Market and Tomato Shed Cafe sits under a canopy of live oaks on Main Road, Johns Island, on the route from US 17 to Kiawah and Seabrook Islands.
It is the retail arm of the Ambrose family, who have farmed Wadmalaw Island since 1976 and shrimped local waters since 1967, and it combines a farmers market, a grocery and gift shop, and the Tomato Shed Cafe.
The produce counter runs from Lowcountry tomatoes, sweet corn and fresh herbs through fruit and vegetables brought in from further afield, with a call ahead list for bulk orders. The market carries sauces, stone ground grits, local honey, jellies and handmade goods from local makers, and the cafe serves lunch Tuesday to Saturday and supper Thursday to Saturday. The market itself is open Tuesday and Wednesday 9am to 6pm and Thursday to Saturday 9am to 9pm.

We always stop here on the way to Kiawah! First of all to get our boiled peanuts. This time, we picked up dinner for the first night and wow! We got the meatloaf with sides and I loved the homemade mashed potatoes, gravy and butter beans. My husband got the same but with fresh tomato cuke salad. This tasted like a meal you would make yourself and I am pretty picky about my meatloaf. My daughter and I went back for lunch one day, and sadly they did not offer the meatloaf at lunch. The crab cake was good, but not my favorite.
This was good, the selection okay; service was good but the price, it's overpriced just like everything.
We didn't eat here, but browsed the store and picked up Sweet Tea. Really good local produce, nice frozen dinners, and local delicacies you can only find here. Was a bit pricey for the gift shop but the place was packed for lunch and I did notice the boys from the fire department across the street picked up to go boxes, so I'm assuming there is a decent price/quality relationship.
