The best farms

  1. 1Hiltonbury JerseysHiltonbury JerseysButcher in Winchester4.7 (172 reviews)Hiltonbury Jerseys is a small family run dairy farm at Compton in Winchester, milking around 140 prize winning pedigree Jersey cows on Hampshire grass. The milk is sold raw or pasteurised and is never standardised or homogenised, so the rich, creamy Jersey flavour survives the journey from cow to bottle. The farm shop sells the milk and cream alongside Jersey ice cream, fudge, Jersey beef, free range eggs, baked goods, local honey and jams, and even a raw Jersey milk soap. It opens seven days a week from 10am to 4pm, with raw milk available from 11am to 3.45pm.
  2. 2Gambledown FarmGambledown FarmButcher in Romsey5 (81 reviews)Gambledown Farm sits on a hill above the Test Valley in Hampshire, with views across to the Isle of Wight. It is a mixed family farm growing cereal crops and forage brassicas alongside a herd of pedigree Beef Shorthorn cattle, with all crops direct seeded into undisturbed ground to protect the soils. The herd was established in 2001 to supply fully traceable beef, and though no longer registered organic it runs on the same high welfare, low input principles, mob grazed on permanent grassland that gets no artificial fertiliser. Steaks, mince and burgers are sold from the farm's honesty shop, and you can phone or email to place an order. The farm also hosts stays, events and a supper club in its converted barns.
  3. 3Heckfield Home FarmHeckfield Home FarmFarm shop in Hook4.6 (11 reviews)Heckfield Home Farm is the farm of the Heckfield Estate in Hampshire, growing fruit, vegetables, plants and flowers in a biodynamic market garden alongside its wider farming, dairy and conservation work. Produce is picked just before it is sold, and the farm opens to the public through a calendar of sales and events. On select Saturdays there are produce sales from 9am to 1pm, with seasonal vegetables, cordials, jams and preserves to take home and coffee from the container cafe. Plant and flower pop up sales run from 9am to 3pm at peak points in the season, and ticketed workshops range from cheese tasting to preserving and cake decorating, with dates and tickets on the website.
