The best farms

  1. 1A market stall fridge of goat cheese and raw goat milk beside a price chalkboardThe Goat Milk LadyRaw milk farm in SourisThe Goat Milk Lady is a family run goat dairy in Souris, up in northern North Dakota, home to a mixed herd of Alpine, Saanen, Nubian and Nigerian Dwarf goats. Everything is made in small batches from the herd's raw milk, using traditional methods and with a close eye on freshness. Goat milk soap is the speciality, including a Soap of the Month club that posts a surprise bar to subscribers' doorsteps. Raw milk is available too, and the family share farm life through their blog and social media. Delivery is offered, and the farm is open on weekdays.
  2. 2Erickson FarmsErickson FarmsRaw milk farm in CliffordErickson Farms is a fifth generation family farm in Clifford, North Dakota, where Seth and Micki Erickson have added a first generation raw dairy. After Micki's long illness was traced to mold poisoning, the couple rebuilt their lives around food they raise themselves, bought their first milk cow, Ruth, and grew from there. Their A2A2 raw milk comes from Jersey cows named Ruth, Raina, Rosie, Rita and Ruby, milked under a strict sanitation protocol developed with the Raw Milk Institute, with milk samples sent for testing every week. Alongside the milk they grow microgreens from organic seed and soil, brew kombucha on organic teas, raise heritage pigs on soy free feed in the tree lines, and supply free range eggs from a partner producer. The farm runs rotational grazing, composting and near waste free practices. Orders are picked up weekly in Fargo, Mayville and Grand Forks, or at the farm by appointment.
  3. 3Gardendwellers Farm & RanchGardendwellers Farm & RanchRaw milk farm in SourisAdam and Apryl Mawby run Gardendwellers Farm & Ranch with their four children at Souris, at the foothills of the Turtle Mountains in north central North Dakota. Soil health is the foundation of the place: their Katahdin hair sheep and dairy sheep are rotationally grazed for the sake of the soil, the plants and the animals, and their Freedom Ranger broiler chickens live in moveable chicken tractor pens pulled to fresh ground every day so the birds can forage on pasture. They sell USDA inspected lamb cuts, whole and half lambs and their own pasture raised chicken direct to the people who eat it, and the farm store lists pork alongside them. The dairy is two Jersey cows, Caramel and Presleigh, grazing the farm's diverse pastures in the warmer months and fed an alfalfa grass hay mix through winter, with locally grown peas, oats, barley and sunflower seeds at milking. Their milk is sold raw, unpasteurised and unhomogenised, through a weekly or a flexible membership for local pickup, and the family invite customers to come and watch milking for themselves. Alongside the animals they grow 30 different herbs, freeze dried in small batches into culinary herbs and herbal teas, with fresh herbs in season and large cloved hardneck garlic every August through the fall. In the winter and spring Apryl makes herbal milk soaps, salves and lip balms, which ship anywhere in the United States.
