Five Freedoms Dairy is a welfare first Colorado dairy at Galeton founded by vet Kevin McSweeney, offering raw milk herd shares and dairy products with calves left on their mothers.
Five Freedoms Dairy is a small Colorado dairy at Galeton in Weld County, founded by veterinarian Dr Kevin McSweeney to show a dairy can put the welfare of its cows first. The herd is kept deliberately under 100 cows so the dairyperson knows every animal, and calves are not separated at birth: mothers nurse and care for their young for at least five months, an uncommon practice in the US. The cows live outside with access to pasture, shade and soft bedding, are fed a grass based diet, and typically live twice as long as the industry average.
Milk is offered through herd shares, with Saturday pickup points across the Front Range from Fort Collins and Loveland to Longmont, Boulder and several Denver locations, arranged in advance by email. The farm also runs a CSA and online menu whose line spans full fat, skim and chocolate milk, butter, Greek and skyr yogurt, ricotta, creme fraiche and half and half.
