In Virginia it is only legal to drink raw milk from your own cow, so members buy a share of the herd and the farm takes care of the rest.
Share owners pay a monthly boarding fee that covers the care, board and milking of their cow, and in return collect fresh raw milk every week without doing the farm work themselves. The family also runs a summer camp and a junior homesteaders programme, and welcomes volunteers on the farm.
