The best farms

  1. 1Roast MuttonRoast MuttonButcher in Kendal4.8 (48 reviews)Roast Mutton is a nose to tail butcher's shop in Kendal specialising in grass fed, locally reared meat from small farms the butcher knows and trusts. Wild venison comes straight from estates in the South Lakes, taken as whole carcasses and prepared in the shop, and the dry cured bacon is made from Lyth Valley reared Saddleback and Berkshire Black rare breed pork, salted and matured over several weeks with nothing added. Handmade sausages are made fresh each week with at least 95% meat and natural casings. Everything is sold over the counter at the shop on Woolpack Yard, open Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 5.30pm.
  2. 2Whin Yeats DairyWhin Yeats DairyRaw milk farm in Carnforth4.5 (19 reviews)Whin Yeats Dairy is a family run farm at Hutton Roof near Carnforth in Cumbria, milking a home-bred herd where every cow is known by name and some cow families have been on the farm for 25 years. The milk is sold raw, cooled and bottled on the farm from cows milked that morning, never pasteurised or homogenised, and the same milk goes into their two farmhouse cheeses, Farmhouse and Fellstone. Alongside milk and cheese the farm sells its own pork, lamb and eggs, with half pigs available delivered. Milk can be picked up from the self service stand at the farm, and the family also takes a stall at local food festivals and events.
  3. 3Primal MeatsPrimal MeatsButcher in Ambleside4.3 (3 reviews)Primal Meats is an online butcher run from Hill Farm at Launde, selling 100% grass fed meat with delivery across the UK. The business is built on regenerative farming and works with a network of partner farms, holding Pasture for Life and organic certificates, with a range tailored to ancestral health diets such as paleo and keto. The shop covers 100% grass fed beef, lamb, mutton and hogget, organic and free range chicken, free range pork, wild game, offal and stock bones, and bacon, burgers and sausages. Buy individual cuts, one off meat boxes or a subscription box, ordered online for home delivery.
