They started with a flock of tiny chickens, soon added a herd of tiny goats (Nigerian Dwarves), and have since expanded into some larger goats as well. Part of the herd is registered with ADGA or MDGA, and breedings are planned for milk production, health and longevity, and sweet temperament, with the herd tested regularly for CAE, CL and Johne's to keep it clean tested. The goats eat hay from local farms, get out on the property through the summer to forage, and are supplemented with spent grain from a local brewery, beet pulp, alfalfa and a grain mix for the milkers, all of it free from soy and sourced locally as much as possible.
Raw goat milk is sold year round through a herd share, which Alaska Statute 17.20.015 allows: you buy partial ownership of the herd and that entitles you to a portion of the milk. The base share is half a gallon a week, with cheese, cream and kefir options, and there is usually a waitlist in the winter months when production is slower, with priority going to families whose babies and children need the milk. Pickup is at the farm in Chugiak, with limited availability at a pickup site in Anchorage, serving Anchorage, Eagle River and the Mat-Su Valley. A summer flock share covers chicken and duck eggs, fertilised eggs and young chickens, ducks and geese come in spring and summer, and the family now breeds KuneKune pigs. They love having visitors, run baby goat events and offer a volunteer and mentorship program for anyone who wants hands on homesteading experience.
