The best farms

  1. 1Middle FarmMiddle FarmRaw milk & meat · Lewes4.5 (1033 reviews)Middle Farm is a 625 acre working family farm on the South Downs at West Firle, near Lewes in East Sussex, farmed by the Pile family for over sixty years and now run by Helen and Rod with their sons Joe, Noah and Gulliver. The farm keeps a pedigree Jersey herd, all named after apples and pears, and describes their raw milk as a hug in a glass, free from interference and additives, with apple pomace from the farm's daily pressing in the cows' diet. One of the country's first farm shops opened here in the 1960s and now offers more Sussex produced food and drink than any other, beside a butcher's shop selling additive free meat reared at Middle Farm and on local Sussex farms, a cosy tearoom, and a cider barn holding a national collection of over 100 draught ciders and perries. The open farm welcomes families every day to meet the Jersey calves, sheep, goats, pigs and chicks.
  2. 2Tablehurst FarmTablehurst FarmRaw milk & meat · Forest Row4.6 (404 reviews)Tablehurst Farm is a biodynamic farm at Forest Row in East Sussex whose award winning farm shop has grown from a tiny one day a week operation back in the 1990s. The butcher's counter sells the farm's own biodynamic beef and lamb and organic pork and chicken, with nitrate free bacon cured and smoked on site, and the six hectare garden supplies over ninety varieties of biodynamic fruit and vegetables. The shop also stocks bread baked on the farm by Fermento Bakery, eggs from Orchard Eggs, cheeses from High Weald Dairy and around fifty savoury pies and ready meals from the farm's own Pie Kitchen. Raw milk from the grass fed Jersey herd, whose calves stay with their mothers until they can graze, is sold from a vending machine outside the shop, so bring your own container.
  3. 3Plaw Hatch FarmPlaw Hatch FarmRaw milk, meat & eggs · East Grinstead4.7 (350 reviews)Plaw Hatch Farm is a 200 acre community owned biodynamic farm on the edge of the Ashdown Forest near Sharpthorne, held by a charitable trust and farmed biodynamically for forty years. It is a true mixed farm, with a dairy herd providing raw milk, cheese, yoghurt and cream, beef cattle, sheep, pigs and laying hens, and a 12 acre garden of seasonal fruit and vegetables, with close to 500 acres farmed in all within a 12 mile radius. The farm shop sells all the farm's own produce plus organic goods from local suppliers, open 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and closed Sundays and bank holidays. There is an open farm policy too, so pick up a map in the shop and take the farm walk to see how the land and animals are kept.
  4. 4Orchard EggsOrchard EggsEggs5 (14 reviews)Orchard Eggs is a small family owned poultry farm at the end of Brambletye Lane in Forest Row, East Sussex, run by Karen and Daniel Hoeberichts. The farm follows biodynamic agriculture, with hens living in mobile houses that rotate through the orchard, kept with their beaks intact and reared without antibiotics. The eggs are sold at a fair price through independent shops, farmers' markets and cafes around Sussex, including the market stalls of Brambletye Fruit Farm, as well as to restaurants, bakeries and box schemes. The farm cares about food miles, so the map on their website points you to the nearest stockist.
  5. 5The two growers standing behind a table of just picked vegetables and cut flowersPadswood FarmFarm shop · Spraysbridge5 (12 reviews)Padswood Farm is a regenerative market garden at Harts Green near Sedlescombe in East Sussex, growing vegetables without pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers and keeping soil disturbance to a minimum with no-dig methods. The produce is sold through a weekly veg box scheme, hand picked and delivered on Saturday mornings to Battle, Hastings, Robertsbridge, St Leonards, Sedlescombe and Westfield, or collected from the farm from 10.30am on Saturdays. From June to October everything in the box is grown at Padswood, with trusted organic farms filling the gaps over winter.
  6. 6My Little FarmMy Little FarmRaw milk, meat & eggs · Hassocks4.5 (15 reviews)My Little Farm is a smallholding in the South Downs near Hassocks, run on a membership model where customers join the farm and share in what it produces. Crops grow in living soil without synthetic chemicals, heritage breed livestock forage naturally on diverse pastures, and a small Jersey herd grazing those same fields provides raw dairy. The heart of the offer is the weekly Smallholder Box, filled with seasonal vegetables, pasture raised chicken, pork, lamb and beef, heritage hen eggs, raw dairy and organic sourdough, delivered to your door. Extras such as milk kefir, bakery items and pantry staples can be added from the farm shop each week.
  7. 7The Traditional Cheese DairyThe Traditional Cheese DairyRaw milk · Heathfield5 (9 reviews)The Traditional Cheese Dairy is run by the Delves family, third generation dairy farmers at Burnt House Farm in Waldron, East Sussex, where the family has been milking cows since 1962. They bought the long established cheese business in 2021 and moved production onto their own farm, so the award winning cheeses are now handmade with free range raw milk from the family's own grass based, high welfare herd. The range includes Olde Sussex, Burwash Rose, Goodweald Smoked, Lord of the Hundreds, Scrumpy Sussex and the Christmas Burjack cheddar, sold through the online shop with UK shipping and from the dairy itself, where a cheese vending machine is open 24 hours a day. The farm embraces traditional methods, nurturing the land and hedgerows, and everyone working there is described as a grazing advocate with the animals' freedom and health paramount.
