Robin Betts
Cheesemaker
Third generation on the family dairy farm set up by his grandfather in 1950; the Betts family have farmed since 1495.
Winterdale Cheesemakers at Fairseat near Wrotham, Kent makes Winterdale Shaw raw milk cheddar from its own family herd and sells raw milk, raw cream and cheese from its Saturday Cheese Barn.
Winterdale Cheesemakers hand makes Winterdale Shaw, a traditional cheddar style cheese, using unpasteurised milk from the family's own dairy farm high on the North Downs above the village of Wrotham in Kent.
The Betts family have farmed since 1495 and set up the dairy in 1950; Robin and Carla Betts began cheesemaking in the 2000s, and the cheese is cloth bound and matured for ten months in cellars built into the chalk downs.
Everything is made carbon neutrally using the farm's own green energy from the sun, wind and ground, and the cheese has been supplied to names from Fortnum and Mason to Wimbledon and The Goring Hotel. The Cheese Barn on Platt House Lane opens every Saturday morning from 10am to 2pm, where visitors can watch the cheesemaking, peek into the maturing cave and buy raw milk, raw cream, raw milk cheese and butter. The family also sells raw cows milk and cheese at Shipbourne farmers market on Thursday mornings.

Went there on the off-chance, after reading so many great reviews. Sadly, the shop closed 3 years ago: -(
Sadly it is closed..
Lovely little shop tucked away on a country lane. Had previously bought some of their cheese at a local market. It's near Trosley CP, so after a morning dog walk we called in to buy some Winterdale Shaw and Stichelton. Fabulous cheese and really friendly staff.

Cheese Barn Saturdays 10am to 2pm. Shipbourne farmers market Thursdays 9am to 11am.
We do not hold prices, availability, parking, access details or event dates for Winterdale Cheesemakers. The farm answers those directly on its own site, by phone or by email.
Fabulous versatile cheese that can be used for a variety of dishes. Worked best in pickle sandwiches and egg teacakes, but lovely in any situation. Really nice people making yummy cheese, what's not to like: ) I did go to town trying it in every use i could think of. Much enjoyment ensued.
Nice farm shop with quality produce. The cheese they make is excellent and other products such as butter, ham, hand made chutneys, strawberries, raspberries, apples are all of very good quality. I believe it's a family business and the people are very courteous and welcoming. Definitely recommended.⁸
This such a special location. We purchased a 500g ( half a kilo) of Winterdale Shaw cheddar as a tester. It is special with a distinct aroma (my wife describes it as old shed, “affectionately “)that demands a return to the cheese board. This cheese is worth the visit in it’s own right never mind the other offerings in the shop. In the shop there is a great view of the dairy where the cheese is produced. If you visit take along some bottles for the fresh milk it will be worthwhile, when we visited there was a queue of locals with their dogs collecting milk, that says it all for us. We will return for Winterdale Shaw to add to our Christmas hampers. Really pleased with our purchase.
Such a wonderful place, looking forward to our cheese later (although I did sample a few in the shop) so delicious.
