They bought the property from a family who had called it home for 25 years, and it came with its name, given for the westward views over rolling hills toward the coastal mountain range. Bringing animals back to the place was the first priority: they tile drained the soggy fields, put in sturdy fencing and repaired the barns, and their design and build studio, MD Haney and Co., sits in the heart of the farm in the original carriage house. Their days are bookended by morning and evening chores.
The farm sells raw milk, grass fed and finished beef, and breeding stock. Oregon does not allow raw milk to be sold as a retail product, so customers buy a share of ownership in the cow through a shared animal ownership agreement and collect their own milk at the farm, self serve, three days a week, bottled in half gallon glass jars. Westerlook is a Raw Milk Institute listed farm and sends a sample to an independent lab at least once a month to check bacteria counts. The cows graze rotationally through the dry months from March to October and are kept under cover on grass and alfalfa hay through the wet Oregon winter. Alongside the milk and beef there is a farm store and baked treats, and the family opens the farm up for creative workshops and nightly stays in the guest house.
