Suzanne Willow and Lanita Witt drove up snowy Shale City Road on the last morning of 1984, looked down into a hidden valley with a big barn and a little house, and put in an offer two weeks later. They built a dairy goat operation that keeps continuity with more than 150 years of grazing on this ground while undoing what earlier use took out: cattle were fenced off the land in 2008, roughly 80 acres of eroded wetland have been regenerated until Western Pond Turtles came back, and more than 7,000 ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, incense cedar and sugar pine seedlings were planted into an overstocked white fir forest. Jackson County named them Tree Farmers of the Year in 2007 and the ranch was called a Watershed Friendly Steward in 2009. Dr Witt died in December 2022 and Suzanne carries the work on. The on site, self serve Farm Store and the farm itself are open to the public every day from 11am to 5pm. The store sells organic raw goat milk from the ranch's own hand raised Alpine herd, in two sizes, fresh eggs including the popular rainbow eggs from their chickens plus large duck and goose eggs, and whatever organic vegetables the chalkboard says is ready, often arugula and leaf lettuces. The farm is certified organic by Oregon Tilth. You can book a farm tour to watch the dairy goats being milked and collect chicken eggs, walk about eight miles of trails, or stay on in the Meadow House, the Farmhouse Studio or the forested campground. Maremma livestock guardian dogs work here, so no visiting dogs or pets are allowed, and it is worth calling for road conditions in winter.

Academics by trade, the family began farming as a path toward a more ethical and sustainable relationship with the food they eat. They keep a pure bred herd of Nigerian Dwarf goats, every doe registered, and take part in the American Dairy Goat Association's Dairy Herd Improvement Registry and Linear Appraisal. The does have free choice access to alfalfa hay, varied forage, kelp, loose minerals and fresh water, with a daily boost of dried herbs, flowers and seeds, and protein rich grain feed only while they are in milk. A weekly herbal dewormer keeps worm loads healthy through winter, and chemical dewormers or antibiotics are reached for only when absolutely necessary. Everything the dairy sells is raw and unpasteurised: goat milk by the quart, half gallon or gallon, a monthly milk subscription, kefir, soft spreadable chevre and dry salted feta. Alongside the dairy the farm stand carries free range eggs, sourdough loaves baked on Sunday mornings, sourdough starter, and seasonal apples and pears. Whole goats can be pre ordered for a November pick up. Milk and kefir are poured by appointment, cheese and eggs wait in the farm stand fridge and freezer, and pick up is in Philomath only. The family takes cash and Venmo and offers discounts to WIC and SNAP recipients, and to anyone else struggling to make ends meet. The name Eichenalm brings together the old growth oak forest of their first farm and the alpine meadows Sebastian grew up beside.

Every cow is tested A2/A2. Raw milk is offered through a herd share. The cows graze rotationally managed pasture when the weather allows, winter on alfalfa and orchard grass hay in a dry, well bedded barn, and at milking are fed alfalfa pellets and less than one percent of their body weight in rolled barley. The milking parlor is open for public inspection daily and the farm is listed with the Raw Milk Institute. Milk is reserved for each day and collected at the farm, with a farm tour and raw milk handling introduction at the first pickup. The farm also milks sheep and makes smoked pecorino.

Westerlook Farm

They bought the property from a family who had called it home for 25 years, and it came with its name, given for the westward views over rolling hills toward the coastal mountain range. Bringing animals back to the place was the first priority: they tile drained the soggy fields, put in sturdy fencing and repaired the barns, and their design and build studio, MD Haney and Co., sits in the heart of the farm in the original carriage house. Their days are bookended by morning and evening chores. The farm sells raw milk, grass fed and finished beef, and breeding stock. Oregon does not allow raw milk to be sold as a retail product, so customers buy a share of ownership in the cow through a shared animal ownership agreement and collect their own milk at the farm, self serve, three days a week, bottled in half gallon glass jars. Westerlook is a Raw Milk Institute listed farm and sends a sample to an independent lab at least once a month to check bacteria counts. The cows graze rotationally through the dry months from March to October and are kept under cover on grass and alfalfa hay through the wet Oregon winter. Alongside the milk and beef there is a farm store and baked treats, and the family opens the farm up for creative workshops and nightly stays in the guest house.
