Ian and Julie Hughes began selling unpasteurised milk in 1980, and the family are now the longest standing sellers of raw milk in Sussex.
The shop has an on-site butchery, with beef from the farm hung for 21 to 28 days, milk-fed pork and rose veal, alongside raw milk, local cheese, seasonal fruit and vegetables, eggs, bread and Sussex wines and beers. Goodwood Home FarmFarm shop in Chichester4.4 (78 reviews)Home Farm is the organic farm of the Goodwood Estate at Chichester in West Sussex. The estate farms organically, with cattle, sheep and pigs raised on pasture across the estate, and the dairy herd is milked by a robotic system that lets the cows choose when to be milked.
The farm shop at Home Farm sells the estate's organic meat and dairy, including award winning cheeses, alongside handcrafted beer and gin and a range of fresh artisan produce. You can shop in person or order ahead for collection.
Produce is pre-order and collection only: order by 15:00 Thursday, collect Fridays from midday at the farm shop.
Butterbox FarmButcher in Haywards Heath4.9 (29 reviews)Butterbox Farm in Scaynes Hill, West Sussex has been in the same family since the 1920s. Today it carries 140 Dexter cattle, 800 sheep and a growing number of pigs living in the woodland. Pat, who began the Dexter herd with her late husband John in the 1970s, still checks her cattle every morning and evening. The Dexters, the smallest breed of cattle in the world, are grown slowly on a grass only diet.
Their beef is available weekly from the farm, which holds a pop-up farm shop every Friday and Saturday selling homegrown beef, pork and lamb, with delivery also on offer.
Knepp Wild Range MeatFarm shop in Horsham4.9 (19 reviews)Knepp Wild Range Meat comes from the Knepp Estate at Dial Post, just south of Horsham in West Sussex, land that was once intensively farmed and is now a pioneering rewilding project. Free roaming herbivores graze at low density across the estate, shaping habitats and restoring watercourses as they go, with no fertilisers, chemicals, high energy feed or farm machinery involved.
The meat that results comes from animals living wild on permanent pasture, and buying it supports the estate's rewilding work. The estate sells its wild range meat direct, open daily for collection, with delivery available too.
Danefold House FarmsButcher in HorshamDanefold is a family run livestock farm in the Low Weald of Sussex at West Grinstead, near Horsham, breeding and rearing pedigree Aberdeen Angus, Beef Shorthorn and White Park cattle. All are slow matured traditional native breeds raised on a species rich, 100% pasture diet, and the farm is certified by Pasture for Life, the movement of British farmers producing animal products in the most natural way possible. The beef is naturally marbled, rich in omega 3 and aged on the bone for a minimum of three weeks before being prepared by a local artisan butcher.
Beef is sold direct through a pop up farm shop at the farm, where customers pick their own cuts rather than a whole box, and at farmers markets including Steyning in Sussex and Pimlico Road and South Kensington in London on Saturdays. Each year the farm also hosts country markets at Danefold with over 60 stalls of local produce, live bands and family entertainment.
Orchard Park MeatsButcher in PetworthOrchard Park Meats is the meat side of Orchard Park Farm, a family run farm in the South Downs National Park at Lurgashall, near Petworth. The farm started in 1995, gaining its first flock by swapping a puppy for six sheep, and now runs about 150 cattle and 300 breeding ewes across more than 1,000 acres of pasture, woodland and heathland. The herd is mostly native Sussex and shorthorn cattle, with a mixed flock of Southdown, Jacob and Texel ewes. Beef and lamb are grass finished on mixed pastures and meadow hay, and the farm says no fertilisers or growth hormones are ever used.
Meat is sold directly at monthly Meat Up days on the farm, where you can buy fresh cuts from the fridges, collect a pre-ordered beef or lamb box, walk the fields and gardens, and meet the family. Joe, one of four brothers, is lead herdsman and shepherd. The farm says its whole beef herd is due to gain organic status.
