The best farms

  1. 1Charlie's Farm ShopCharlie's Farm ShopFarm shop in Pulborough4.7 (317 reviews)Charlie's Farm Shop sits on Southview Farm at Bury near Pulborough in West Sussex, where the Hughes family have been producing milk since 1919, starting with a herd of 7 Guernsey cows. Ian and Julie Hughes began selling unpasteurised milk in 1980, and the family are now the longest standing sellers of raw milk in Sussex. The shop has an on-site butchery, with beef from the farm hung for 21 to 28 days, milk-fed pork and rose veal, alongside raw milk, local cheese, seasonal fruit and vegetables, eggs, bread and Sussex wines and beers. A fish stall visits the car park on Thursday lunchtimes, and orders can be placed by email.
  2. 2Goodwood Home FarmGoodwood Home FarmFarm in Chichester4.4 (77 reviews)Home Farm is the organic farm of the Goodwood Estate at Chichester in West Sussex. The estate farms organically, with cattle, sheep and pigs raised on pasture across the estate, and the dairy herd is milked by a robotic system that lets the cows choose when to be milked. The farm shop at Home Farm sells the estate's organic meat and dairy, including award winning cheeses, alongside handcrafted beer and gin and a range of fresh artisan produce. You can shop in person or order ahead for collection.
  3. 3Laines Organic FarmLaines Organic FarmFarm shop in Haywards Heath4.8 (32 reviews)Laines Organic Farm has been growing traditional, organic, outdoor, seasonal field vegetables at Cuckfield in West Sussex since 1978, and the farm is certified biodynamic. Everything is grown in open fields and picked in its season rather than forced. The farm sells through its own online shop, where a seasonal veg box brings a mix of ten seasonal products, roots, greens and some fruit, alongside apple juice and dried flower bouquets. Orders are picked up from local collection points, and the farm itself sits on Newbury Lane in Cuckfield.
  4. 4Splash FarmSplash FarmFarm in Arundel5 (21 reviews)Splash Farm is a family run dairy farm at Burpham near Arundel, inside the South Downs National Park in West Sussex. The herd is grass fed all year round and completely closed, with every cow reared on the farm from its own cow families, and calves stay on either as dairy replacements or as Aberdeen Angus beef calves. The cows are milked twice a day, at 5.30am and 2.30pm. A self service vending machine at the farm sells raw milk, slowly pasteurised small batch milk and milkshakes in six flavours. Buy a reusable glass bottle on your first visit or bring your own and refill it each time, and if you fancy staying, the farm also has shepherds huts.
  5. 5Knepp Wild Range MeatKnepp Wild Range MeatFarm shop in Horsham4.9 (19 reviews)Knepp Wild Range Meat comes from the Knepp Estate at Dial Post, just south of Horsham in West Sussex, land that was once intensively farmed and is now a pioneering rewilding project. Free roaming herbivores graze at low density across the estate, shaping habitats and restoring watercourses as they go, with no fertilisers, chemicals, high energy feed or farm machinery involved. The meat that results comes from animals living wild on permanent pasture, and buying it supports the estate's rewilding work. The estate sells its wild range meat direct, open daily for collection, with delivery available too.
