The best farms

  1. 1Fox Holler FarmsteadFox Holler FarmsteadRaw milk, fruit, veg & eggs · RutledgeFox Holler is a tiny, ecologically designed, community based farm at Dancing Rabbit Lane in Rutledge, Northeast Missouri. The family lives and grows food off grid, using rainwater catchment and solar energy, and practices no till and low till farming that weaves management intensive rotational grazing through annual vegetable crops and perennial agroforestry. No synthetic fertilisers, pesticides or fungicides are used, and the goal in their own words is nutrient dense food on a human scale while regenerating soils. Offerings run from raw grass fed dairy to pasture raised eggs, rotationally grazed heritage breed chicken, duck and turkey fed organic grain, and kunekune pigs raised on grass and fattened on acorns for creamy, high quality fat. Seasonal heirloom produce, fruit, nuts and chestnuts follow the growing season. Orders are collected at the farm, with a tour included, or at drop days in nearby communities such as Kirksville and Quincy.
  2. 2Such and Such FarmSuch and Such FarmRaw milk, fruit & veg · De SotoSuch and Such Farm is a 120 acre homestead near De Soto, Missouri, run by Dave and Autumn, who began farming in 2011 with no previous experience and built the whole farm as a true DIY project: Dave designs and builds the systems, Autumn works with the plants and animals. They describe it as the only custom, boutique farm in the St Louis area, growing unique heirloom produce and raising heritage animals for chefs, with pigs living outdoors on pasture and never given routine antibiotics. The farm is part of the Known and Grown network of St Louis area farmers, farms with biodynamic and sustainable practices, and avoids synthetic chemicals. Produce, whole and half hogs, and raw goat's milk in season are sold at Tower Grove Farmers Market on Saturdays and through the farm's CSA, while the online store ships soaps, summer sausage and snack sticks nationwide every Friday. Farm tours are by appointment, and campers can stay at the farm's swimming hole through HipCamp.
  3. 3Piney Creek FarmPiney Creek FarmRaw milk, fruit, veg & eggs · CaboolPiney Creek Farm is the Stevens family's regenerative farm outside the small community of Cabool, Missouri. After several years studying and practicing low input farming systems, the family sold their Oregon homestead in 2019 and moved to a beat up old farm that needed love and healing. Adam completed Geoff Lawton's course to become a Certified Permaculture Designer, and the farm is being restored by planting trees, protecting water resources, building soil and establishing diverse perennial production systems. Everything is pastured, with regular rotations and no confinement indoors, only shelter from bad weather. The farm holds itself to beyond organic standards: no pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or chemical wormers, ever, and the animals are fed locally milled, certified organic feeds. The family sells raw milk from its cows, pastured pork, chicken and lamb, eggs and seasonal vegetables grown with the same care, with pricing and availability by contact.
