Essebeare Farm at Witheridge in Devon is a certified organic, Pasture for Life farm on ancient Culm grassland, selling 100% grass fed lamb and beef boxes, sheepskins and wool direct.
Essebeare Farm sits in a hidden Devon valley at Witheridge, within the UNESCO North Devon Biosphere, on ancient Culm grassland meadows, and the farm itself is listed in the Domesday Book.
Native Red Ruby and Hereford cattle and hardy Lleyn sheep roam the 90 hectare farm, which is certified organic and Pasture for Life, built around rotational mob grazing, hedge and bank restoration and agroforestry. In five years the meadows have gone from a poor baseline to as many as 15 plant species per square metre, and the family has planted 20,000 hedgerow trees and 300 fruit trees.
The farm sells 100% grass fed, organic and Pasture for Life certified lamb and beef in boxes direct from the farm, along with soft lambswool sheepskins and chunky wool. It is run as a family partnership by Olly and Rachel Walker with Mary Hosier tending the cattle, and around 100 local school children visit each year to learn about its biodiversity. The rewilding work featured in The Guardian.
