    The best farms

    1. 1Nezinscot FarmNezinscot FarmFruit, veg & eggs · Turner4.6 (266 reviews)Nezinscot Farm sits at 284 Turner Center Road in Turner, Maine, and became the first certified organic dairy in the state in 1994. The family milks 90 to 125 cows, a mix of Holsteins, Jerseys and Brown Swiss, without antibiotics or hormones, and grows 90 percent of the herd's feed on the farm. Milk ships wholesale through the Organic Valley cooperative, while the farm's own fromagerie turns raw cow and goat milk into hard and soft cheeses made on site. The farmhouse holds a farm store, cafe and bakery, with bread and pastries baked fresh daily and a menu built from the farm's own cheese and meats. A year round full diet CSA offers farm raised beef, pork, chicken, dairy, eggs and vegetables. There is also a yarn shop stocked from the farm's own sheep, llamas, alpacas and goats, and an herbal apothecary run by owner Gloria Varney.
    2. 2Farmer Kev's OrganicFarmer Kev's OrganicFruit & veg · West Gardiner4.9 (19 reviews)Farmer Kev's Organic is a USDA certified organic vegetable farm in West Gardiner, Maine, established in 2009. The farm grows all organic produce and runs a farm share program across central Maine, harvesting and delivering on the same day so shares arrive as fresh as they can be. Shares are signed up for online or on a printable form, with group shares, a calendar of delivery locations, and weekly video updates through the season. The farm's stated values run through sustainability, food safety and fair work: plant based compostable bags instead of plastic, reusable wooden boxes made in Maine, a delivery system that keeps food miles low, and fair wages and jobs in agriculture. Buying a share early helps the farm plan its year and passes the savings back to members.
    3. 3Hart FarmHart FarmFruit & veg · Holden4.8 (6 reviews)Hart Farm is a 160 acre first generation family farm at 430 Copeland Hill Road in Holden, Maine, run by Andrew and Becky Toothacker, who met as apprentices studying Biodynamic agriculture and bought the historic farm in 2019, keeping its original name to honour the Hart family. They produce MOFGA Certified Organic vegetables and raise pastured pork and grass fed beef for the Greater Bangor area, viewing the farm as one functioning organism of fields, soils, plants, animals, compost and people. The farm runs a ten week Summer CSA and a six week Fall CSA with flexible on farm pickups, u pick produce, and a subsidised share fund that reserves a tenth of membership for neighbours who need support, no income verification asked. Farrow to finish heritage pigs are raised on pasture, pork sells as butcher boxes and hog shares, and the family also hosts farm dinners and a Sunday stall at the Bangor Farmers Market. A pay what you want organic veggie cooler stands in Brewer.
    4. 4Tilth & TimberTilth & TimberFruit & veg · CastineTilth and Timber is a small scale diversified farm in Castine, Maine, devoted to producing wholesome food and handcrafted goods for its community. The farm grows a wide variety of vegetables and herbs, sold through CSA shares and its own farm store at 165 Castine Road. Sign ups for the 2026 CSA are open, with full season and summer shares in two sizes, and members praise the rotating weekly variety and food that came out of the ground the same day they collect it. Alongside the produce, the farmers carve woodenware by hand, make herbal care products, and teach spoon carving workshops on the farm. The farm store opens Fridays from 2pm to 6pm between June and October, and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm year round. CSA members know the farmers, Cindy and Troy, by name at pickup, and the farm shares its days' work on Instagram and Facebook.
