The best farms

  1. 1Maple Lane FarmsMaple Lane FarmsMeat · Charleston4.9 (280 reviews)Maple Lane Farms is a five generation family farm in Charleston, Maine, farmed by the Higgins family since 1935. Today it runs around 700 naturally raised beef cattle, a state inspected processing facility with an automated smokehouse, and one of the largest hay dealing operations in the northeastern United States. The farm retail store sells locally raised beef, pork, chicken and lamb, every cut done by hand, sealed and flash frozen straight from the cutting rooms with no old stock. Ordering works by call in: the team fills your order and calls when it is ready, with cash, card and EBT accepted at the store, which opens seven days a week. The farm also sells its Black Label Reserve home raised beef, hay, silage and screened compost, and takes custom processing appointments for customers who raise their own animals. They cheerfully call themselves the candy store for the carnivore.
  2. 2Nezinscot FarmNezinscot FarmFruit, veg & eggs · Turner4.6 (266 reviews)Nezinscot Farm sits at 284 Turner Center Road in Turner, Maine, and became the first certified organic dairy in the state in 1994. The family milks 90 to 125 cows, a mix of Holsteins, Jerseys and Brown Swiss, without antibiotics or hormones, and grows 90 percent of the herd's feed on the farm. Milk ships wholesale through the Organic Valley cooperative, while the farm's own fromagerie turns raw cow and goat milk into hard and soft cheeses made on site. The farmhouse holds a farm store, cafe and bakery, with bread and pastries baked fresh daily and a menu built from the farm's own cheese and meats. A year round full diet CSA offers farm raised beef, pork, chicken, dairy, eggs and vegetables. There is also a yarn shop stocked from the farm's own sheep, llamas, alpacas and goats, and an herbal apothecary run by owner Gloria Varney.
  3. 3The MilkhouseThe MilkhouseRaw milk & meat · Monmouth4.9 (116 reviews)The Milkhouse is an organic dairy farm at Monmouth, Maine, milking Jersey cows whose milk and yoghurt are certified organic by MOFGA. The milk goes into a cream topped original yoghurt, a fruit on the bottom version with organic Maine blueberries, and strained Greek style yoghurts, one sweetened with Maine maple syrup. Fresh whole Jersey milk is sold non pasteurised, and the farm also sells meat and runs a farm store on South Monmouth Road, open long hours every day. Milkhouse yoghurt and milk are stocked by shops around the area as well, with a list of where to find them on the website.

The company operates a local retail meat market alongside a full time USDA inspected slaughterhouse, smokehouse and processing plant, cutting customers' animals to their own specification and offering smoking services from two onsite smokehouses. The shop sells the family's own locally raised beef by the side and quarter, all natural Maine beef dry aged for 14 to 21 days, along with whole and roasting pigs, fresh beef and pork, nitrate free smoked products and six flavours of ground sausage. Their Wicked Good Beef Jerky has been shipped all over the United States and overseas to the troops. The plant is a certified MOFGA processing member, the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association.
