Fat Tomato is an edible garden at Camolin, Co. Wexford, growing over 500 heritage varieties and selling its own produce from an honesty farm shop.
Fat Tomato is an edible garden on Carrig Rua Hill at Ballymore, just outside Camolin in north Wexford.
Chef and writer Anthony O'Toole started it in 2016 with a single polytunnel and has since built it into one of Ireland's most unusual growing spaces, home to more than 500 heritage and open pollinated varieties of vegetables, fruit, herbs and edible flowers. Everything is chosen for flavour, curiosity and biodiversity rather than yield, and nothing artificial goes into the ground.
At the garden gate there is an honesty farm shop, open seven days a week and stocked by whatever the garden is giving that week. Expect fresh vegetables and herbs, rainbow eggs, potted plants, garden seeds and small batch condiments, ferments and drinks made in the farm kitchen. Cash and card are both taken. The wider range of preserves and heritage seeds is also sold through the online shop, with delivery across Ireland.

Fat Tomato is a great Irish enterprise to do business with. It’s so good to find a company that’s happy to go the extra mile to please customers, especially at such a busy time of the year as Christmas. I ordered a number of items recently as a Christmas gift. They arrived within two days, even in such a busy period. The items were so well packaged, that it would have been a shame to undo so much careful wrapping to just place it all in a gift basket, so l simply wrapped the entire box in Christmas wrapping paper. I have never previously come across such thoughtful and individual wrapping of every item. I was amazed as I saw the gift being unboxed on Christmas Day. Nothing in the pack could possibly have gotten broken. This was a very positive shopping experience, during a period when so many people are stressed about gifts arriving in time. It really pays to keep your business in Ireland and Fat Tomato certainly knows how to please its customers.
