- 1Calvey's Achill Mountain LambMeat · Keel4.7 (29 reviews)The Calvey family has reared flocks of mountain sheep on Achill Island for more than 150 years, and Martin Calvey began selling Achill Mountain Lamb under its own name in 1962. The Mayo Blackface ewes roam unfenced commonage on the slopes of Slievemore, grazing grasses, heathers and seaweed as well as the machair, the fertile wind blown sand plain behind the island's beaches that is protected under EU directives. Nothing leaves the island to be handled by strangers: the lambs are reared, killed and cut by the family in Calvey's own on-farm abattoir and butchers in Keel.
The farm store in Keel village sells lamb and mutton cuts, racks, chops and sides, along with Achill Mountain Beef and Achill Island hampers, and half or whole carcasses can be ordered for the freezer. Lamb is seasonal, on sale from July until the lambs are eight or nine months old, and orders are posted nationwide. Farm visits run from April to October.

The dairy is seasonal by design, running from about March to November, and because the cows are milked just once daily the supply of raw milk, cream, butter, yoghurt and kefir is deliberately limited. Once it is gone, it is gone.
During the milking season the on farm Bainne Barn opens from Thursday afternoon through to Saturday evening, restocked with fresh produce each of those days. The barn also stocks Irish cheeses, kombucha, ferments, organic porridge, duck eggs and local honey, and the farm supplies stockists across Mayo, Galway and Sligo.
- 3Glasraí Organic FarmFruit, veg & eggs · Hollymount5 (10 reviews)Joe and Aoife Reilly started Glasraí about ten years ago as a family farm on seven acres at Hollymount in south Mayo, and it is now a certified organic market garden with eight people working on it. Joe grew up on a dairy and beef farm and worked as a carpenter before taking a course in organic horticulture at Mayo Abbey, where he met Aoife, who had picked up organic growing while WWOOFing around the world. They built their first real polytunnels out of old mushroom houses. Their certification is held with the Organic Trust, and they farm for a biodiverse living system rather than a monoculture.
The growing list runs from leafy greens, herbs and salads through potatoes, onions and root crops to mushrooms, fruit and some genuinely unusual vegetables, with eggs and honey alongside. There is a weekly seasonal vegetable box ordered online and collected from the farm on Friday and Saturday, with drop off points in Westport, Castlebar and Cloonbur.

Andarl FarmMeat · Castlebar4.1 (9 reviews)Andarl Farm began in 2012 when Dave and Diana Milestone were left with two orphan piglets, Thelma and Louise, to hand rear. Looking after them gave them an appreciation for pigs, the two became a herd, and the herd became a business selling what they call Velvet Pork, first to friends and neighbours and then to restaurants. In 2017 Compassion in World Farming gave the farm its Good Pig Award, citing a fresh, healthy and active outdoor lifestyle, no confinement during lactation or the dry period, no tail docking, teeth clipping or surgical castration, and bedding and material to root in throughout life.
The online farm store sells pork sausages, back and streaky rashers, pork chops, ribs, pork belly, bacon ribs and ham hocks, posted to homes around Ireland, and the same pork goes to hotels and restaurants. As demand grew the family began working with a small number of other pig farmers they vet themselves, and they now offer beef and lamb from like minded producers alongside their own pork. - 5
Westport HoneyRaw honey · WestportDermot O'Flaherty took up beekeeping after moving to Westport, starting with two hives and building up with his son Aaron to about fifty. The apiaries sit on the land of local farmers in the shadow of Croagh Patrick, looking out over Clew Bay, in country of old meadow land and ditches thick with clover, blackberry, whitethorn and apple blossom, with heather on the hills above. Because there are no arable crops of note in this part of Mayo, nothing gets sprayed, and the bees work every flower, tree and briar within three or four miles of the hive.
The honey is left natural and unpasteurised, as they put it, never touched by human hand and straight from the hive to the jar. Alongside run and set honey they take a late heather crop and an ivy honey, and at Christmas they make gift packs with beeswax lip balms, pure beeswax candles and beeswax moisturiser blocks. They have won prizes at honey shows around Ireland, including the Dublin Honey Show. - 6
Moylurg HoneyRaw honey · WestportMoylurg Honey is a small beekeeping business run from McGreevy Farm at Kilmeena near Westport in Co. Mayo. The honey is raw and comes from the family's own native Irish bees, kept in apiaries around Westport and Claremorris in the west of Ireland.
Jars are sold through the farm's online shop and delivered to your door. There is no shop to call into at the farm, so ordering online or phoning ahead is the way to get hold of it.
