Farm events in the South East

From the Surrey Hills to the Kent coast, the South East's farms host suppers, tastings and open days all year. Find what's on and book a place.

What's on this weekend (20 September)

Today, Sunday 20 September, 30 of the farms Organised lists around the South East open their gates to walk in, taste and buy (145 are open across the UK today). No ticket needed: turn up in opening hours and meet the people producing your food. The pick is below, ranked by Google reviews, each with the hours the farm itself publishes.

Markets, tours and sale days

Some farms keep a rhythm of their own: a weekly market stall, a monthly sale day, a standing tour. In their own words:

  • Winterdale CheesemakersRaw milk · Sevenoaks, KentShipbourne farmers market Thursdays 9am to 11am.
  • Danefold House FarmsMeat · Horsham, West SussexAlso at Steyning Farmers Market and the Pimlico Road and South Kensington markets on Saturdays.

  • 1Northney Farm Tea RoomsNorthney Farm Tea RoomsFarm shop · Hayling Island, Hampshire4.6 (1129 reviews)Open Sunday, tea rooms drinks 10am to 5pm; breakfast 10am to 11:30amNorthney Farm Tea Rooms sits on a working dairy farm in Northney village on Hayling Island, run by the same family that has farmed the island for over a hundred years. Mary and her husband Stan run the dairy side of the farm, milking a herd of 120 pedigree Ayrshire cows, while Mary's brother Simon runs the arable side and the farm shop. Some of the herd is crossed with the farm's Aberdeen Angus bull to produce beef cattle alongside the dairy operation. Mary and Stan's son Tim set up Northney Dairy Ltd in 2008 and began making ice cream from the farm's own milk, and the dairy now also bottles semi skimmed milk. Both are sold in the tea rooms his brother James runs on the farm, where tables in the garden look out over the fields and the cattle. The drinking milk on sale is described by the farm as semi skimmed and bottled.
  • 2Priory Farm EstatePriory Farm EstateFarm shop · Redhill, Surrey4.5 (1274 reviews)Open Sunday, farm shop 10:30am to 4:30pmPriory Farm Estate covers 150 acres of pasture, ancient woodland and lakes at South Nutfield near Redhill in Surrey, founded by the Shinner family in 1957 and still family run after nearly 70 years. Today the estate is best known for its award winning farm shop, garden centre, gift barn, cafes and the Discovery Land adventure play trail, open all year. The farm shop carries seasonal fruit and vegetables, with crab apples, pumpkins and squashes grown on the farm itself in autumn, alongside a butchery making handcrafted sausages by hand, cheeses, bakery goods and deli lines. Much of the range comes from producers across Surrey, Sussex, Kent and beyond under the shop's Love Local banner, so the estate reads mainly as a destination farm shop and family day out rather than a working livestock farm.

The farm keeps a pedigree Jersey herd, all named after apples and pears, and describes their raw milk as a hug in a glass, free from interference and additives, with apple pomace from the farm's daily pressing in the cows' diet. One of the country's first farm shops opened here in the 1960s and now offers more Sussex produced food and drink than any other, beside a butcher's shop selling additive free meat reared at Middle Farm and on local Sussex farms, a cosy tearoom, and a cider barn holding a national collection of over 100 draught ciders and perries.
