    The best farms

    1. 1A1 AG Farmers MarketA1 AG Farmers MarketRaw milk & eggs · Lathrop4.4 (425 reviews)A1 AG Farmers Market is a farm stand at Lathrop, California, run by a local farm-to-fork grower selling direct to the community. Fruit and vegetables are picked fresh from the fields and brought straight to the stand, so what is on offer follows the seasons. The market is open to everyone every day of the week, and buying here keeps money with local growers. It is a straightforward place to pick up seasonal produce grown close to home.
    2. 2Duivenvoorden FarmsDuivenvoorden FarmsRaw milk & eggs · Cottonwood4.8 (97 reviews)Duivenvoorden Farms is a family run raw milk dairy in Cottonwood, California, where the grass fed herd grazes year round and every cow is known by name. Milking happens once a day to keep stress low, winter feed is locally grown non-GMO hay and barley fodder, and the farm bottles its own raw milk on site. The farm store sits in the milk pick up room at the main barn and is open every day from 9am to 6pm, self service with a kiosk taking cards, cash and cheques. Alongside the milk you will find local gelato, jasmine rice, chai, toffee and baked goods, grass fed beef from Rockin H Cattle Co, and eggs, chicken and raw honey from 3C Ranch.
    3. 3A herd of black cattle standing together in dry pasture below wooded hillsPerennial Pastures RanchRaw milk, meat & eggs · Santa Ysabel4.5 (126 reviews)Perennial Pastures Ranch is a regenerative ranch at Santa Ysabel in Southern California, raising cattle on pasture with frequent rotations that mimic natural herd movement, so the grasses recover and the soil improves. There are no synthetic chemicals, no grain feeding and no tillage. The ranch sells grass fed and grass finished beef, from ground beef to bulk boxes and quarter, half or whole cows, along with eggs and A2/A2 raw milk on a weekly Southern California delivery round. You can order through the online shop or find the ranch at local farmers markets.
    4. 4The farming family sitting together holding hens, chicks and a carton of their eggsHappy HensEggs · Ramona4.8 (86 reviews)Happy Hens is an egg farm at Ramona in Southern California where the hens live truly outdoors, going beyond the usual pasture raised standard. The farm is set up for visitors as much as for hens, with farm tours, a picnic area, a playground and petting zoo, and even farm stays for a longer visit. The farm store sells the farm's organic eggs alongside natural and handcrafted local goods, snacks, drinks and chicken themed gifts, and you can meet the chickens at the farm stand when you call in. Online egg orders are for pickup at the Ramona store only.
    5. 5My Sisters' FarmMy Sisters' FarmRaw milk & eggs · Shingle Springs4.8 (28 reviews)My Sisters' Farm is a 10 acre farm in the foothills east of Sacramento, at Shingle Springs, run by three sisters: Pattie, Valerie and Janet. They started with Icelandic sheep, a heritage triple purpose breed kept for wool, meat and milk, then added Royal Palm turkeys and Brahma and Buff chickens. The flocks graze on pasture with supplemental organic feeds, and the brown eggs come from hens that roam the farm by day and are shut in at night only to keep them safe from predators. The sisters work with biodynamic composting methods and aim for a farm where the animals live an organic and natural life, and they built it around day jobs as a firefighter, a sheriff deputy and a nurse practitioner. Milk here works as a herd share. The farm does not sell milk to the public, and the raw milk from the privately owned herd goes only to the people who co-own it. My Sisters' Farm has been a listed farm with the Raw Milk Institute since 2014. Alongside the cow shares, the farm marketplace carries free range eggs, Icelandic sheepskin pelts, sheep products and registered animals, and the sisters run farm memberships and classes, the first of which was felting. At the heart of the land is the Willow Tree Grotto beside the farm's large pond, with a flow form fountain and a view over the lake and the old oaks.
    6. 6A woman holding up two large jars of fresh milk, smiling, with more jars filled behind herKatybug FarmsRaw milk & eggsKatybug Farms is a small family run farm in Oakdale, California, raising goats and chickens with plenty of room to roam and behave naturally. The growing side leans on composting, crop rotation and pesticide free methods, caring for the land as much as the animals that live on it. Milk is supplied through a raw milk herd share rather than over the counter sales. Joining is a matter of filling in the short sign up form on the farm's website, and the family take it from there. There are no posted opening hours, so get in touch through the form before planning a visit.
    7. 7StudeBAKER FarmsStudeBAKER FarmsFruit, veg & eggs · BishopStudeBAKER Farms is a small family run homestead and sourdough bakery on Dixon Lane in Bishop, California. The bread and baked goods are sold from a farm stand built into a restored 1928 Studebaker house car, with pickups on Fridays and Sundays and pre orders taken at least 24 hours ahead. Each loaf carries its own name and label, including Yeastwood original sourdough, Dirty Harry cinnamon swirl, Magnum Force apple sourdough and the High Plains Drifter sourdough cinnamon rolls, alongside jars of strawberry and peach jam and mini carrot cakes. Everything is baked in a home kitchen under an Inyo County cottage food permit. Behind the bakery is a working homestead. The family keeps Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats, chosen for their milk production, and chickens selected for their unusually coloured eggs, and grows heirloom vegetables in beds fed with homemade compost. Fresh eggs and heirloom produce are sold alongside the baking, and every page of the farm's own site carries a standing invitation to get in touch if you want milk or meat.
    8. 8Naranjo Hills FarmNaranjo Hills FarmRaw milk & eggs · TracyNaranjo Hills Farm is a small family dairy and egg farm in Tracy, California. Unpasteurized milk comes from their own small herd of Jersey cows and is sold through a herdshare, with pickup at the farm on a set day and time each week. They never skim the cream, so members take home full creamline milk. In the farm's own words the cows are primarily grass fed on premium hay from a local farmer with access to pasture, are given a small amount of alfalfa, barley, oats and beet pulp at milking time, are never fed soy, and have a mineral buffet available at all times. The farm is a licensed egg handler and sells hand gathered, pasture raised chicken eggs from February to October each year, from hens that eat all the bugs they can find plus certified organic, non-GMO, corn free and soy free feed from a local mill. Four adult mini and midsized Jersey cows named Moochelle, Bluebird, Ballerina and Clover live here alongside a herd sire named Zeus, the herd is registered and disease tested, and mini Jersey calves are offered for sale each year. Six Maremma sheepdogs live with and protect the chickens, mini cows, potbellied pigs and goats from foxes, coyotes, hawks and wandering dogs. The farm is in the middle of relocating to a new 320 acre property.
    9. 9Our Ground Up LLCOur Ground Up LLCRaw milk & eggs · WiltonOur Ground Up is a small dairy at Wilton, California run by Susan Muñoz, producing raw milk on a micro scale with a focus on healthy soil and the part cows play in building it. State dairy rules mean the milk is shared through a herdshare, where members buy a share in the privately owned herd and the farm does the milking, feeding and cleaning up on their behalf. Joining starts with a farm tour, followed by a one time share purchase and a monthly subscription based on how much milk you take. Members collect their milk in returnable mason jars, often alongside seasonal extras such as cream and eggs.
    10. 10Bannister Oak FarmsBannister Oak FarmsRaw milk, meat & eggs · OrovilleBannister Oak Farms was founded in 2013 by Todd and Sherry Kruger and sits among the oaks and pines of the Butte County hills in Northern California. Todd learned to milk cows at eight years old on his family's farm, and the couple later spent a year in an Amish community in Missouri learning sustainable farm-steading. The farm offers raw Jersey milk through a herd share, plus 100% grass fed beef, pastured eggs, small batch poultry and organic grass fed cheese. Create an account on the website to shop or join the herd share, and ring the farm for help setting up a milk subscription.
