  • 3Hickory Leaf Dairy GoatsHickory Leaf Dairy GoatsRaw milk · Missoula4.6 (8 reviews)Hickory Leaf Dairy Goats is a working ranch in the Missoula Valley of western Montana, where Cheryl Stahl has bred registered Nigerian Dwarf, LaMancha and Mini LaMancha dairy goats since establishing the herd in Texas in 2005. Cheryl and her husband John share 300 acres with his Royal White hair sheep, along with Dexter cattle, horses and chickens. When Montana passed its Local Food Choice Act in 2021 the ranch turned its focus to selling raw milk to the public. The goat milk is fresh and unpasteurised, cooled as quickly as it is milked and bottled in half gallon jugs by equipment that means the milk is never touched by hand. The goats eat organic pasture, hay and a non GMO organic feed the farm mixes itself, herbal remedies are used ahead of conventional medicine, and herd and equipment are tested twice a year through an udder health lab. Artisan soft goat cheeses, from chevre and feta to flavoured cheese balls, are made whenever the milk supply allows.

The mercantile sells the ranch's own Angus beef, free range, grass fed and finished with no hormones or antibiotics, along with raw milk from the milk cows, local raw honey and coffee. Wherever possible the shop stocks Montana made products to support fellow producers in the state. Orders go out by delivery, so get in touch to buy.

The goats are raised on natural rearing principles with herbal care, in the tradition of Juliette Levy: no grain, no chemicals, no pharmaceuticals, no commercial wormers and no vaccines. They eat wild meadow grasses, alfalfa and sainfoin hays and seasonal wild forage, and each goat is milked by hand twice a day through a ten month season, the milk filtered and stored in glass jars. Raw goat milk and raw kefir lead the offer; the farm's kefir culture has been running since 1999 and is its most popular product. Seasonal farmhouse cheeses, duck eggs, herbal tea blends, kefir grains and sourdough starter round out the farm fresh list, ordered ahead and collected at the farm on a weekly pickup. The farm also sells at Bozeman's Lindley Park farmers market on summer Tuesdays and hosts a harvest market each October.

Raw milk directories list the herd as A2/A2 and grass fed. What is not sold at the gate goes out on weekly town drops: Great Falls on a Tuesday afternoon, Shelby on a Wednesday, a subscription only Great Falls drop on a Thursday and Choteau on a Friday. The herd is small enough that every cow has a name. Saoirse and Dolly were both due to calve in the spring, their calves half sisters and future milk cows, and Butter, who is Sugar's calf, has grown up the image of her mother. Watching over them is Magen, a young livestock guardian dog still learning friend from foe around the farm. Alongside the dairy the family raises pasture raised poultry in batches through spring and summer, sold as whole chicken, and the subscription list also carries cream, yogurt, butter, chicken and duck eggs, frozen chicken broth and a shelf of sourdough baking.
